Emmanuel Amunike is reportedly among those being considered by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to manage Nigeria's Super Eagles ahead of the June international window.

The West African giants have been without a manager since the departure of Jose Peseiro, who opted to leave his role following the expiration of his contract at the end of February.

Amunike is rumoured to be the odds-on favourite to be named as coach of the three-time AFCON winners, which seems to have triggered Tanzanian journalist, Ernest Junior.

The East African journalist has criticised the reports of Amunike being appointed as coach, stating the NFF should rather opt for another manager if they are particular about achieving continued success with the 2023 AFCON finalists.

Tanzanian journalist warns NFF over Amunike

In an interview with media outlet OwnGoalNigeria, the football expert shared his perspective on the reports suggesting that Amunike is the favourite for the role.

"I couldn't help but laugh when I read that Amunike is the front-runner for the Super Eagles coaching position. Looking at his record in Tanzania, he only managed to win two games and lost six. I'll give him credit for leading us to the AFCON, but our qualification was largely due to the performance of other teams in our group, not just our own."

"Ask any Tanzanian football fan, and they'll tell you that we have seen significant progress since Amunike's departure. Frankly, the Super Eagles deserve a better coach unless they don't have ambitions for the next World Cup," he concluded.

Delving into Amunike's managerial statistics since entering senior coaching, data from Brila.net shows the 53-year-old indeed achieved two victories, a draw, and six defeats during his time with Tanzania.

Additionally, Amunike registered an underwhelming record of zero wins, two draws, and one defeat during his brief stint with the Egyptian side, El Makasa.

NFF reverses decision on Amunike

Sports Brief also reported that the NFF are revisiting the potential of appointing Amunike as the Super Eagles coach.

Despite being initially excluded from the final shortlist, the 53-year-old is now said to be back on the NFF's shortlist.
